Couple Therapy

The process of becoming a refugee or seeking asylum can contribute to the development of marital or relationship difficulties. These difficulties may be as a result of outgrowing a current partnership and having great difficulty in making an adjustment.

Some partners blame each other and project their stress onto the other person through feeling uncontained and mentally ill-equipped to deal with trauma and change. Sometimes the couple relationship suffers because one partner is better able to deal with the adjustment issues and moves on.

This may jeopardise their marriage or partnership. If this is the case, after an initial assessment, we work with couples to provide them with space and encourage them to verbalise their thoughts and feelings in a holding environment. With the help of the therapist they can think through the origin of their difficulties and consider to which extent migration and trauma has compounded this.
