Mentoring Volunteers wanted

Work with refugees in a mental health setting

“I have gained so much from the experience”

Would you like to be involved in a fantastic project? Do you enjoy meeting people from all over the world? The Refugee Therapy Centre is looking for enthusiastic, committed medical students from UCL to volunteer for its Mentoring Project.

This is a really great opportunity for medical students to gain experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers in a mental health setting. And it gives you the chance to start changing people’s lives now - before you are qualified.

Volunteers will get to meet regularly with a senior clinical psychologist for supervision. Being a mentor involves spending 3 hours a week supporting isolated people with adapting to life in the UK and improving their English language skills.

To apply, please complete the application forms below

Successful applicants must attend the Induction course to be scheduled for October.

Some comments from medical students who volunteered last year:

“The experience has emphasised to me how the little things can make such an important difference. What I have found particularly inspiring is how children have turned into amazingly mature and cheerful young adults despite growing up under the most difficult circumstances.”

“The more I have worked with people at the Centre, the more I have learnt about the hardships people face when they come to live in London, and the total isolation that they can experience, whilst often carry the burden of very troubled pasts. My time here has made me far more aware of the difficulties faced by others. I feel like my work here has been worthwhile, but I have also benefited from the time, as I have gained so much from the experience of talking to the people that I have met.”

Note - since operational activities have been temporarily suspended,  please email to show an interest in this position.
