Refugee day - 20th of June

This week we will be observing Refugee Day. In 2001 the United Nations decided that refugees should have a special day and announced the 20 June as World Refugee Day. It is an opportunity for everyone to experience, understand and celebrate the rich diversity of refugees. In the UK, Refugee Week takes place every year around World Refugee Day. According to the UNHCR currently at least 108.4 million people around the world have been forced to flee their homes. Among them are 35.3 million refugees, many of whom are under the age of 18. There are also millions of stateless people, who have been denied a nationality and lack access to basic rights such as education, health care, employment, and freedom of movement. The news of the sinking of the fishing boat in Greece, thought to be travelling from Libya to Italy with many migrants and refugees on board, reminds us how important it is that we address the struggles of people who are forced to flee their homes. No one chooses to leave their home to be a refugee, unless there is no other option. People must be tremendously resilient and determined in the face of unimaginable trauma and adversity, in order to seek refuge with hope. Despite the challenges they face, refugees bring with them cultural heritage, skills, and talents that enrich the host society. Today, and every day, we aspire to provide therapeutic services to people coming to the Refugee Therapy Centre for help. We hope you will join us in any way you can, standing with us in solidarity, and supporting us to provide much needed assistance to refugees from around the world. Refugees who come to us for therapeutic support need to find peace and the opportunity to resettle in a new safe environment. At the Refugee Therapy Centre every one of us gives attention, listens carefully with full respect and acceptance. Do join us in this vitally important work.

Rt Hon Jeremy Corbyn MP

“I am always inspired by the understanding and empathetic approach of the Refugee Therapy Centre and am proud to be a patron since it was first established in 1999. The Centre is a great help to many people who have been through the most appalling stress of seeking asylum in the UK. When arriving in a new country such as the UK, asylum seekers not only have to deal with the personal trauma they have due to experiences of violence and persecution from which they have fled in their country of origin, but they also have to adapt to a new culture and way of life. All of the services offered by the Refugee Therapy Centre contribute to helping people they work with to be able to overcome their trauma and successfully integrate into their new community. There are millions of people around the world who are refugees or displaced people due to war, economic persecution, environmental degradation and human rights abuses. All want a life in which they can contribute to society. Let us value all humans.”

Thanks to our Patron Jeremy Corbyn, a tireless MP in the Refugee Therapy Centre constituency who has been representing our constituency over 40 years as an MP. We are proud of being privileged having him as the Centre Patron since 1999.  He has been supporting non-stop the ethos of the Centre, a charity which is serving Refugee and Asylum seekers as well as personally supporting anxious, confused and traumatised patients and accompanying them through their immigration and housing journey, supporting their rights for social and economic equality. For many years Jeremy received the Centre’s patients during a monthly open morning and helped them with their outstanding issues. We, the Clinicians, witnessed over and over how after meeting Jeremy the Patients’ mental health improved. Jeremy, with his passion, his support, and dedication has provided hope to patients who have endured the most inhumane treatment from many places around the world, where respect of basic human rights is non-existent.

Attacks on Jeremy can only come from people who envy his integrity and commitment to peace and human rights, always standing up for ordinary people.
