This programme is one of the first of its
kind in Europe: combining a psychodynamic and
psychoanalytic approach with intercultural perspectives.
It provides professional training in Intercultural
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, with a flexible specialism
in working with refugees and asylum seekers, and other
black and ethnic minority groups. Successful completion
of the full MA programme leads to eligibility for
registration with the UKCP – CPJA.

Introductory Course on Counselling Refugees
This is a 1 year course for people who would like to
learn about working with refugees and asylum seekers in
the community. People already volunteering or working
in the community will also be welcomed.
The Introductory Course on Counselling Refugees offers
you the opportunity to use your own experiences to help
others. We are looking for refugees and asylum-seekers
from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences and
learn from each other, in working with refugees and
asylum seekers.
Candidates who successfully complete
this one year introductory course may be accepted for a
Diploma/MA Qualifying Counselling/psychotherapy Training
Course, which will enable them to work towards being
accredited by the United Kingdom Council for
Psychotherapy (UKCP) or the British Association for Counselling
and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Course Details
The course runs on Friday afternoons from 1.00 - 6.00
p.m. from October – July. Each week includes a
lecture, a seminar with student presentations, and an
experiential discussion group. Over the year we cover such subjects as:

Introduction to counselling, psychotherapy and
psychoanalysis

Common mental health problems among refugees &
asylum seekers

Working with people who have experienced torture
or violence

Issues facing professionals working with
refugees & asylum seekers

Varying therapeutic approaches

Working with children, adolescents, families and
groups
-
Cultural and gender differences, and mental
health
-
Trauma, Depression, anxiety, vulnerability and
Resilience
Some of the people teaching on the course
are: Aida Alayarian, Micol Ascoli, Dorothy Daniell,
Dilys Daw, Tirril Harris, Josephine Klein, Roland Littlewood
and Lennox Thomas.
Fee
The full fee for the year is £840.
However, some concession may be available for asylum seekers
and unemployed refugees with little or
no income.
